Über das Lied
“Gremo na Dobrčo” (Slovenian for “Let’s Go to Dobrča”) – also known in German as “Danke für die Gastfreundschaft” (“Thank You for the Hospitality”), is a polka from the 1990s by the Vilko and Slavko Avsenik. It was recorded by their studio ensemble, which retained the original names Ansambel bratov Avsenik and Slavko Avsenik und seine Original Oberkrainer, despite featuring an entirely different lineup from the iconic quintet of the 1960s to 1980s. This particular polka is not widely performed, which may why it caught my attention. The Slovenian title refers to Dobrča, a mountain near Begunje, the Avsenik brothers’ hometown.
This instrumental was recorded during the later stage of the Avseniks’ career, after they had ceased live performances – reportedly due to the deteriorating condition of Slavko Avsenik’s back. Slavko recorded several albums throughout the 1990s with a studio ensemble featuring a new line-up of musicians. Click here for a rare video of a a live performance by this ensemble.
Trivia: This studio ensemble appeared with Slavko Avsenik on various television performances throughout the 1990s, particularly on Austrian and German television shows which relied on studio recordings (a practice known as lip-sync oder playback), allowing Slavko to avoid playing his heavy Hohner Morino live. Instead, he used a lighter, reedless ‘mime’ version of a custom Slavko Avsenik edition Morino, distinguished by its silver-coloured bellows.
