“Gremo na Dobrčo” (Slovenian for “Let’s Go to Dobrča”) – also known in German as “Danke für die Gastfreundschaft” (“Thank You for the Hospitality”), is a polka from the 1990s by the Vilko and Slavko Avsenik. It was recorded by their studio ensemble, which retained the original names Ansambel bratov Avsenik and Slavko Avsenik und seine Original Oberkrainer, despite featuring an entirely different lineup from the iconic quintet of the 1960s to 1980s. Böhmischer Traum – Bohemian Dream (N. Gälle) [Sheet music]

“Böhmischer Traum” (German for “Bohemian Dream”) is a polka composed in 1997 by Norbert Gälle from Germany, originally recorded by Scherzachtaler Blasmusik and has become a hit in Alpine Folk Music and Brass Music internationally. It has been covered by various Alpine Folk Music groups, Oberkrainer style quintets and trios, Brass ensembles, solo accordionists, as well as electronic music under the name “Der Hellste Stern” (The Brightest Star) by DJ Ötzi. Spomin – Erinnerung (V. & S. Avsenik) [Sheet music]

“Spomin” (Slovenian) or “Erinnerung” (German), meaning “Memory,” is one of the oldest and most popular waltzes by the legendary Avsenik Brothers from Slovenia who pioneered the “Oberkrainer” style of Alpine Folk Music from Slovenia. Originally performed as an instrumental and adapted in the 1960s with vocals, the lyrics evoke a woman’s fairy tale-like memories brought back by the song (see translated chorus): “A little white wreath on my head, glistening in the sun…Smiles everywhere on my cheeks and happiness in my eyes…And the bells sing a song never sung so…A tiny ring of gold, a memory of that spring.” Typically performed as an instrumental, this waltz has become a staple

“S harmoniko med smučarji” (Slovenian for “With accordion among skiers”), or “Am Jakobshorn” (German for “At The Jakobshorn” – a mountain in Switzerland) is an instrumental polka by Jože Burnik, recorded by Alpski Kvintet or Alpenoberkrainer from Slovenia in the early 1980s. It featured on Alpski Kvintet’s Slovenian album “Pozimi Na Bledu” (Winter at Bled) and their German album “Trachtenfest” (Traditional costume festival) with Jože Burnik as their accordionist. Although not as commonly played as other hits by Burnik like “Dobro Jutro” (Guten Morgen), it is often played by established Oberkrainer trios and quintets who can manage a technically challenging polka such as this one. Montag Polka (German for “Monday Polka”, or “Ponedeljekova Polka” in Slovene) is a composition by Australian musician Paul Gillett and myself. Paul and I perform together in my Oberkrainer/Alpine folk music trio, Alpen Musikanten (Alpski Muzikantje in Slovene), based in Melbourne. Paul is an experienced and versatile performer who works across a wide range of genres as a guitarist, vocalist and composer – including French Gypsy Swing, Italian Folk, Skiffle, Independent Film Scores, and his own original folk music under the pseudonym Mr. Floyd Thursby. “V pustnih dneh” (Slovenian for “On Carnival Days”), also known as Faschingspolka (German for “Carnival Polka”) – was originally performed by Avsenik’s trio in the 1950s and later recorded by Avsenik’s quintet in the 1960s. Like many Avsenik polkas, it has since become a staple in Alpine folk music, frequently played by bands across Slovenia, Northern Croatia, Northern Italy, Austria, and Bavaria. Alex Pellizotti (baritone) and Daniel Clama (guitar) hail from Paularo, a town in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, nestled between the sea and the mountains of Austria and Slovenia.
