‘Bohinj, Bohinj’ (named after Lake Bohinj in Slovenia) is a beautiful waltz by Toni Iskra, an iconic Oberkrainer style accordion player from Slovenia, best known as the accordionist in Hišni Ansambel Avsenik (Avsenik House Ensemble or Hauskapelle Avsenik). Toni is known for his virtuosity on the piano accordion, his unique playing style, and amazing compositions. Otožnost – Wie ein Blatt im Wind (J. Burnik) [Sheet music]

“Otožnost” (Slovenian for “Sadness”) or “Wie ein Blatt im Wind” (German for “Like a leaf in the wind”) is a beautiful waltz by Slovenian composer and accordionist Jože Burnik, who is most known for his work with the legendary Alpski Kvintet (Alpenoberkrainer) from Slovenia as well as his unique take on the Oberkrainer style of Alpine folk music. Burnik has written many compositions which are regularly played across most styles of Alpine folk music throughout North Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, North Italy and Bavaria, including “Polka Express”, “Dobro Jutro” (“Guten Morgen”), among others. “Razposajene Harmonike” (Slovenian for “Cheerful accordions”) or “Harmonikas, Los!” (German for “Accordions, let’s go!”) is a fast instrumental waltz for the accordion written by Ingrid (Inge) Huberti (née Campestrini, Brüggemann), an extraordinary vocalist, accordionist, lyricist, composer, and yodeler from Austria who has contributed immensely to the Oberkrainer style of Alpine folk music. Ingrid has written many popular songs in the Alpine folk music repertoire across both Slovenian and German languages, including “Ko muzikant od doma roma” (Ein musikant kennt kein zuhause), “Veseli Muzikant” (Mit Musik), Mladost je kot veter (Vergangene Zeiten), and many other polkas and waltzes which are currently performed throughout Slovenia, Austria, Bavaria, North Italy, and North Croatia.

Gorsko jezero – Am gebirgssee (V. Štrucl) [Sheet music]

“Gorsko jezero” (Slovenian for “Mountain lake”) or “Am gebirggsee” (German for “At the mountain lake”) is an instrumental waltz by Slovenian composer and musician Vinko Štrucl. It was recorded by Slovenski instrumentalni kvintet (Oberkrainer Sextett) in the 1970s, whose albums credited the composition to Štrucl’s pseudonym, Vine Darin. Vinko Štrucl (1933-2006) worked across Slovenian folk (Oberkrainer), brass, and orchestral music, and led the Police Orchestra of Slovenia for several years. Gorenjska Polka – Klarinetten Polka (V. & S. Avsenik) [Sheet music] [Tutorial video]

Gorenjska Polka (Slovenian for ‘Polka from Gorenjska‘) or Klarinetten Polka (German for ‘Clarinet Polka’) is an instrumental polka by the legendary Avsenik brothers, Vilko and Slavko Avsenik from Slovenia, dating back to the 1950s (not related to the older ‘Clarinet Polka’ or ‘Polka Dziadek’ from Poland). ‘Gorenjska’ refers to a region in Slovenia known as Upper Carniola in English, or Oberkrain in German. This upbeat polka is usually played by Oberkrainer style quintets instead of trios, featuring a complex clarinet solo in part B, and normally played very fast, sometimes performed as fast as 170bpm by the Avsenik ensemble in some live recordings. Sanjam o domovini – Heimatträume (V. & S. Avsenik) [Sheet music] [Tutorial video]

‘Sanjam o domovini’ (Heimatträume in German) is a waltz by the Avsenik brothers from Slovenia, and the title means ‘Dreaming of my homeland’. It was originally sung by one of the Avsenik ensemble’s female vocalists, Jožica Svete, who was part of their vocal trio from 1974 to 1990 and like most other Avsenik vocalists, has been a professional singer for most of her life across different genres. The lyrics sing of how emotionally difficult it is to be alone in a foreign country, longing to be back home, and how much it hurts (who says polkas and waltzes are always happy?).
