Srečno otroštvo (R. Smolnikar) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track]

This waltz titled “Srečno otroštvo” means “Happy childhood” and was written by Robert Smolnikar, a highly regarded Slovenian accordionist who performed in one of Slovenia’s highest calibre Slovenian folk-pop music and Oberkrainer style ensembles called Štajerskih 7 (which means Styrian 7, relating to the region of Slovenian Styria, not to be mistaken with the bordering Austrian region of Styria). Robert Smolnikar has composed many terrific songs including a beautiful waltz “Zapri oči” with a musette influenced accordion solo in the second part, which is so lovely to listen to, but very difficult to play. Smolnikar currently plays in his own trio, Robert Smolnikar Trio, yet his songs from his Štajerskih […]

Rad te imam – Auf nach Kranjska Gora (J. Burnik) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track] [Tutorial video]

‘Rad te imam’ (Slovenian for ‘I like you’) or better known by its German title ‘Auf nach Kranjska Gora’ (which means ‘Off to Kranjska Gora‘) is a polka by Jože Burnik and recorded by Alpski Kvintet (Alpenoberkrainer) in the early 1980s. It has also been performed on YouTube by Ansambel Juhej from Slovenia as “Veselo v Kranjsko Goro”. It’s a fast, energetic polka from an era where Burnik was the accordion player in Alpski Kvintet, and the ensemble had become very well known across Austria, and by the mid 1980s had influenced many other Austrian folk music ensembles, who began emulating the ‘Alpski’ sound which Alpenoberkrainer have become known for

Sehnsuchtswalzer (J. Burnik) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track]

Sehnsuchtswalzer (German for “Waltz of longing”) was recorded by legendary Slovenian folk music and Oberkrainer music composer and accordionist, Jože Burnik, and one of Slovenia’s most popular zither players, Miha Dovžan, in the early 1990s. Burnik was the accordion player in Alpski Kvintet (Alpenoberkrainer) from Slovenia throughout the 1970s, who later performed with other Austrian ensembles including Heimatlandecho. Dovžan has released many albums with his own ensemble, Ansambel Mihe Dovžana, as well as collaborated across different styles and groups including with Lojze Slak, Jože Burnik, and performed the zither on the soundtrack of Slovenia’s most popular film, Cvetje v jeseni. Interestingly, before Burnik joined Alpski Kvintet, Burnik and Dovžan played

Na ples – Auf zum tanz (J. Burnik) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track]

This is a polka by legendary Slovenian accordionist Jože Burnik who recorded this song with Alpski Kvintet (Alpenoberkrainer) in the late 1970s or early 1980s. It is typically played in a quintett but this is my solo accordion arrangement played to the baritone and guitar track recorded by Brian Pavlic from Canada (baritone) and myself earlier this year (which was made for our quintett collab, linked here). What makes this song challenging is the key of A flat, D flat and G flat, which means a lot of black keys, but I believe it’s definitely achievable with the suggested fingering that I’ve written into my arrangement. Flott aufg’spielt (E. Moser) [Sheet music] [Play-along audio]

This is Erich Moser’s most popular polka, Flott aufg’spielt, which roughly translates to ‘Playing quickly’. Erich Moser was an amazing steirische harmonika (diatonic button accordion) player from Austria, who was well known for his great technical skills and many unique, beautiful melodies like Kleiner Spatz am Dach, Walzer fur harmonika, and so on. Unfortunately Erich passed away at the age of 37 in 1992, but left us with his legacy of amazing recordings and compositions. This song is the first polka I had ever heard by Moser, which he himself would play with seemingly great ease, despite the complexity of this song. I’ve arranged this song with finger positioning ideal

Mladi kot smo nocoj – Wenn die Kornblumen blüh’n (A. Nipič) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track]

‘Mladi kot smo nocoj’ (Young as we are tonight) is one of my favourite songs by Alfi Nipič, from his own ensemble’s (Alfi Nipič In Njegovi Muzikanti) first album in 1990, arranged by legendary Boris Kovačič. Alfi Nipič was one of Avsenik’s vocalists from the 1970s through to the end of the Avsenik ensemble’s live performing career in 1990.
