‘Ribič Jaka’ is a polka by the Avsenik brothers from Slovenia, which was recorded in at least two different versions throughout the 1960s, with different names. The earlier instrumental version was released on German records as ‘Liebes Mädchen komm’ (Dear girl, come on) with a Slovenian title of ‘Oj, ti Janka’ (Oh, you, Janka), whereas the later version with vocals by Franc Koren and Ema Prodnik was titled ‘Ribič Jaka’ (Fisherman Jaka) and featured on the 1964 Slovenian LP ‘Stari mlin’ (Old mill). Gorenjska Polka (Slovenian for ‘Polka from Gorenjska‘) or Klarinetten Polka (German for ‘Clarinet Polka’) is an instrumental polka by the legendary Avsenik brothers, Vilko and Slavko Avsenik from Slovenia, dating back to the 1950s (not related to the older ‘Clarinet Polka’ or ‘Polka Dziadek’ from Poland). ‘Gorenjska’ refers to a region in Slovenia known as Upper Carniola in English, or Oberkrain in German. This upbeat polka is usually played by Oberkrainer style quintets instead of trios, featuring a complex clarinet solo in part B, and normally played very fast, sometimes performed as fast as 170bpm by the Avsenik ensemble in some live recordings. ‘Sanjam o domovini’ (Heimatträume in German) is a waltz by the Avsenik brothers from Slovenia, and the title means ‘Dreaming of my homeland’. It was originally sung by one of the Avsenik ensemble’s female vocalists, Jožica Svete, who was part of their vocal trio from 1974 to 1990 and like most other Avsenik vocalists, has been a professional singer for most of her life across different genres. The lyrics sing of how emotionally difficult it is to be alone in a foreign country, longing to be back home, and how much it hurts (who says polkas and waltzes are always happy?). “Reci le zakaj” (Slovenian for “Just tell me why”) or “Sag warum, warum” in German (which means “Say why, why”) is a waltz by Slavko & Vilko Avsenik from Slovenia (pioneers of the Oberkrainer style of Alpine folk music) which dates back to the 1950s. 3 recordings seem to be available; one by Trio Avsenik from 1954, one by the Avsenik quintet with vocals in Slovenian, and another by the quintet with vocals in German. This is another one of the Avsenik brothers’ polkas which have become more widely played in the last few decades. Its Slovenian title translates to “We’re not going to another planet” and its German title similarly translates to “We’ll stay here in this beautiful world”. Its lyrics speak of refusing to visit other planets, as Earth is too beautiful and precious to trade for any other location. Mavrica čez Gorenjsko – Regenbogen über Oberkrain (V. & S. Avsenik) [Sheet music]

This is one of the Avsenik brothers’ most popular instrumental waltzes, Mavrica čez Gorenjsko (in Slovenian) or Regenbogen über Oberkrain (in German) which in both languages translate to “Rainbow over Gorenjska” (the Gorenjska or in English, Upper Carniola region of Slovenia). It first appeared on Ansambel bratov Avsenik’s Slovenian 1969 LP “Odmev s Triglava” (Echo from Triglav; Triglav being Slovenia’s highest mountain).
