Po svoji poti grem – Ich gehe meinen weg (A. Toplišek) [Sheet music]

This is a vocal waltz by Andrej Toplišek from Slovenia which translates to “I’m going my own way”. It was recorded by Okrogli Muzikantje (Runden Oberkrainer) in 2002 (in the key of B) which was sung by Andrej, and by Andrej Toplišek Septett in 2019 (in the key of A) which was sung by another Oberkrainer legend, Sandi Jug. I’ve provided arrangements in either key, which both go to the key of E in the second part, and the key of F in the third part. This is one of my favourite older waltzes by Andrej, who has now made 2 albums (including on vinyl) with his newer ensemble, Andrej […]

Nekoč, Nekje (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music]

‘Nekoč, Nekje’ (Slovenian for ‘Sometime, somewhere’) is an infrequently played but beautiful waltz by Boris Kovačič, originally played by Vital Ahačič on the chromatic button accordion on an Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča album from 1974, ‘Čolnič Sreče‘. Everything that Vital played was not only technically brilliant, but also full of feeling, and when paired with Kovačič’s compositions (of which there are hundreds), the result is something really special, as evident on all Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča recordings. Although it was originally played in A flat on the chromatic button accordion, it becomes a real challenge to do it justice on the piano accordion in the same key. Therefore my sheet music arrangement

Mladi kot smo nocoj – Wenn die Kornblumen blüh’n (A. Nipič) [Sheet music] [Accompaniment track]

‘Mladi kot smo nocoj’ (Young as we are tonight) is one of my favourite songs by Alfi Nipič, from his own ensemble’s (Alfi Nipič In Njegovi Muzikanti) first album in 1990, arranged by legendary Boris Kovačič. Alfi Nipič was one of Avsenik’s vocalists from the 1970s through to the end of the Avsenik ensemble’s live performing career in 1990. Gurktaler walzer (Austrian traditional) [Sheet music]

‘Gurktaler walzer’ is a traditional Austrian waltz, named after the Gurktal Alps mountain range in Austria. There are many different arrangements of it, each musician playing it to their own liking. Here is the way that I like to play it, which is a bit more focused on the Slovenian or ‘Oberkrainer’ style. Sheet music:📝 Sheet music pdf (F)

La mula de Parenzo – Dekle iz Poreča (Istrian folk song) [Sheet music]

‘La mula de Parenzo’ is a folk song dating hundreds of years ago, from Istria, a peninsula in the Adriatic Sea shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The name translates to ‘Dekle iz Poreča’ (Slovene) or ‘The Girl from Poreč/Parenzo‘ (English) and it is sung in various Italian dialects. One of its most popular recordings is by Lidija Percan, an Istrian Croatian singer. This song is very well known in Slovenian, Croatian, North Italian and nearby Austrian populations. ‘Skrei Net – Arctic Cod Archive’ has a more detailed explanation of the origins of ‘La mula Parenzo’: The first Italian song which sees the codfish as protagonist is La Mula de Parenzo (the
