Misel na tebe (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music]

‘Misel na tebe’ (Slovenian for ‘Thinking of you’) is another of the many beautiful waltzes by Slovenian composer Boris Kovačič, who wrote hundreds of songs across different genres during his career, including many Oberkrainer style polkas and waltzes. This waltz was released in 1964 on his ensemble’s (Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča) album ‘Vsi mladi fantje’ which also featured his wife Stanka Kovačič on vocals, Avsenik’s clarinet player from the 1950s to early 1960s Franci Teržan, and incredible chromatic button accordion player Vital Ahačič, among others. Kovačič’s compositions and arrangements were groundbreaking in the Oberkrainer style, and are among the most beautiful, unique and highest calibre recordings in this style. Unfortunately not […]

Moje sanje, sanje najine (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music]

This is a beautiful waltz by legendary Slovenian composer Boris Kovačič, sung by his wife Stanka Kovačič in the 1960s and covered several times by Slovenian popular-folk (Oberkrainer) ensembles. The title translates to “My dream, our dream” and sings of two people in love, who dreamed together every night when they first met, and continue to share dreams and wishes throughout their lives. Stanka Kovačič is known for her exceptionally gentle, beautiful voice, which was perfectly paired together with Trio Vital Ahačič’s warm accompaniment, beautiful lyrics, and Boris Kovačič’s beautiful compositions and arrangements. Prinesi mi rože (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music] [Tutorial video]

This is one of the most popular Slovenian folk-pop (Narodnozabavna) waltzes from the 20th century, and is one of Stanka and Boris Kovačič’s most popular songs, recorded in 1966, which has become a Slovenian evergreen. To my knowledge this song has not been widely played in German speaking alpine/folk music ensembles, except occasionally as an instrumental. In the 2000s it was popularised again by one of the earliest female-only alpine/folk music ensembles, Vesele Štajerke. What caught my attention the first time I heard it, was Vital Ahačič’s solo on chromatic button accordion in part B. Ahačič is known for his heartfelt, gentle playing, which perfectly compliments Stanka Kovačič’s vocals. ‘Learn

Nekoč, Nekje (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music]

‘Nekoč, Nekje’ (Slovenian for ‘Sometime, somewhere’) is an infrequently played but beautiful waltz by Boris Kovačič, originally played by Vital Ahačič on the chromatic button accordion on an Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča album from 1974, ‘Čolnič Sreče‘. Everything that Vital played was not only technically brilliant, but also full of feeling, and when paired with Kovačič’s compositions (of which there are hundreds), the result is something really special, as evident on all Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča recordings. Although it was originally played in A flat on the chromatic button accordion, it becomes a real challenge to do it justice on the piano accordion in the same key. Therefore my sheet music arrangement
