This is one of the most popular Slovenian folk-pop (Narodnozabavna) waltzes from the 20th century, and is one of Stanka and Boris Kovačič’s most popular songs, recorded in 1966, which has become a Slovenian evergreen. To my knowledge this song has not been widely played in German speaking alpine/folk music ensembles, except occasionally as an instrumental. In the 2000s it was popularised again by one of the earliest female-only alpine/folk music ensembles, Vesele Štajerke. Nekoč, Nekje (B. Kovačič) [Sheet music]

‘Nekoč, Nekje’ (Slovenian for ‘Sometime, somewhere’) is an infrequently played but beautiful waltz by Boris Kovačič, originally played by Vital Ahačič on the chromatic button accordion on an Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča album from 1974, ‘Čolnič Sreče‘. Everything that Vital played was not only technically brilliant, but also full of feeling, and when paired with Kovačič’s compositions (of which there are hundreds), the result is something really special, as evident on all Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča recordings. Although it was originally played in A flat on the chromatic button accordion, it becomes a real challenge to do it justice on the piano accordion in the same key. Boris Kovačič wrote countless unique songs that were recorded by Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča along with his wife, iconic singer Stanka Kovačič and son Matej Kovačič from the 1960s through to the 1980s. This waltz translates to “Where the waterfall rustles” and was recorded by Ansambel Borisa Kovačiča with son Matej on accordion in the 1980s one of their last albums “S Polko In Valčkom Po Sloveniji”.
